Americans Feel Overcharged, Confused, and Out of Control When It Comes to Electricity Costs

Across the country, people are opening their electricity bills and finding charges they didn't expect or fully understand. Those surprises throw off monthly budgets and make it tough for people to know what they'll owe from one bill to the next. They can also create real stress for households trying to stay on top of their day-to-day spending.

Many customers also feel the billing process is confusing, which makes it hard to trust what they’re being charged. To get a clearer picture of what people are dealing with, we surveyed 1,004 U.S. consumers about bill spikes, financial strain, provider trust, and how open they are to prepaid electricity as an alternative.

Methodology

We surveyed 1,004 U.S. consumers to understand their experiences with electricity bills, including bill surprises, trust in utility providers, financial strain, usage habits, and interest in prepaid or real-time usage options. The survey examined how people interpret their bills, the actions they take in response to unexpected charges, and how cost predictability affects their provider preferences.

The gender breakdown of respondents was 58% women, 41% men, and 1% nonbinary. The survey sampled consumers nationwide, and 15% of respondents were from Texas. The data was collected in November 2025.
